Conformation Titling:
All breeding females earn their championships in conformation before being bred. This requires entry fees, travel, professional handling or extensive owner-handler training, grooming, and time invested in proving the dog meets breed standard. These costs vary widely but represent a significant investment in each breeding dog.

Stud Fee: $2,000–$3,000
Selecting the ideal stud dog involves researching pedigrees, health testing, temperament, and structure. Distance and travel are not limiting factors when finding the right match to improve my lines.
What "Improving the Line" Actually Means:
Every breeding decision I make is intentional. I study my female's structure. Where is she strong? Where could she improve? Then I search for a stud who excels where she needs support, while maintaining the qualities she already possesses. This isn't about finding a convenient local dog or the cheapest option. It's about finding the dog whose genetics, when combined with my female's, will produce puppies better than either parent alone.
I spend months researching potential studs. I study their pedigrees going back generations. I examine health testing results, not just for the stud himself, but for his parents, siblings, and offspring. I look at photos and videos of his movement. I talk to his breeder about temperament. I reach out to owners of his previous puppies to ask how they've developed. By the time I commit to a breeding, I know more about that stud than most people know about their own dogs.
If the right stud is across the country, I will travel across the country. If he's in another state, I will drive or fly. The cost of travel is nothing compared to the cost of settling for a dog who isn't the best match simply because he's nearby. My puppies, and the families who will love them, deserve better than "good enough."
Pre-Breeding Testing:
Brucellosis Testing (required before every breeding) $170
Progesterone Testing (multiple draws) $400
Progesterone testing is essential for timing the breeding accurately and calculating the due date. Knowing the exact whelping date allows for informed decisions regarding medical intervention if complications arise.
Trans-Cervical Insemination (TCI):
I prefer side-by-side TCI performed at the stud's location. This method minimizes stress for the dam, eliminates risk of injury to either dog during a natural breeding, and provides the highest success rate for conception.
Travel & Lodging (multiple days for repeated sessions) $1,000+
Semen Collection Fee (per session) Varies
TCI Procedure Fee (per session) Varies
Two TCI sessions per breeding are recommended for optimal results.
Total breeding costs before pregnancy confirmation: $4,000+

Whelping Preparation & Supplies
▼
Creating a safe, clean, temperature-controlled environment for the dam to whelp and raise her puppies requires specialized equipment and supplies.
Whelping Setup (One-Time Investment):
Professional Whelping Box $650
Heating Mat & Heat Lamp Varies
Puppy Culture Complete Program Bundle $430
Whelping Supplies (Per Litter):
Whelping Kit (hemostats, bulb syringes, towels, clamps, scales) $100
Disposable Puppy Pads Varies
Clean Bedding & Towels Varies
Thermometers & Monitoring Equipment Varies
What These Numbers Don't Show:
For the first two weeks of a litter's life, I sleep on a mattress next to the whelping box. Newborn puppies cannot regulate their own body temperature. They cannot eliminate without stimulation. They can be accidentally smothered by their mother in seconds. So I am there every two hours through the night, checking temperatures, weighing puppies, ensuring everyone is nursing, watching for any sign of trouble.
I set alarms that wake me at 2 AM, 4 AM, and 6 AM. I weigh each puppy and record their growth. I watch the dam for signs of infection or milk fever. I monitor the puppies for fading puppy syndrome, which can take a healthy-looking puppy in hours if caught too late. Sleep becomes something that happens in fragments, stolen between checks.
As the puppies grow, the work shifts but doesn't lessen. By three weeks, they need stimulation—toys, textures, sounds, early neurological stimulation exercises. By four weeks, they're eating solid food that must be prepared multiple times daily. By five weeks, they're mobile chaos machines who need constant supervision, enrichment, and cleanup. The whelping box expands into a puppy pen, then a puppy room. My entire life reorganizes around their developmental needs.
This is the work that no dollar amount captures. This is why I don't work when I have puppies. You cannot hire someone to care this much.
Litter Training & Potty Infrastructure:
Litter training begins at 3 weeks using alfalfa pellets and artificial grass potty boxes. This early training establishes clean habits and prepares puppies for successful housebreaking in their new homes.
Alfalfa Litter (3 bags/week from 4 weeks to placement) $216+
Artificial Grass Potty Boxes (2 per litter, replaced each litter) $104
Artificial grass boxes mimic the texture puppies will encounter in real-world potty areas, including service animal relief stations in airports and public spaces. Puppies who learn on artificial grass transition seamlessly to real grass—and they arrive in your home already understanding the concept of designated potty areas.
Emergency C-Section: While standard poodles typically free whelp without complications, medical intervention may become necessary. C-section costs range from $2,000 to $4,600 depending on location and whether the procedure falls during emergency hours.

Premium Nutrition & Puppy Training
▼
A Dual-Diet Approach:
Puppies are raised on both a balanced raw diet and Orijen Amazing Grains Puppy kibble. This intentional approach maximizes health benefits while ensuring a smooth transition to your home.
Why I Feed Both Raw and Kibble
Health benefits of raw: Raw feeding provides nutrients in their most bioavailable form. Dogs are facultative carnivores whose digestive systems evolved to process whole prey: muscle meat, organs, and bone. Puppies raised on raw show visibly better coat quality, steadier energy levels, and improved digestion.
Practical benefits of kibble: Not every family is prepared to continue raw feeding—and that's okay. By introducing puppies to both raw and a high-quality kibble, their digestive systems are already adapted to both. This means no upset tummies during the transition home, and you have flexibility in how you choose to feed going forward.
Travel-friendly: Raw food requires careful handling and refrigeration. Kibble won't spoil during the journey home, ensuring your puppy has safe, familiar food from day one in your house.
What My Puppies Eat
Raw diet: A balanced, pre-made raw diet consisting of muscle meat (beef, chicken, turkey), organ meats (liver, kidney, heart), raw meaty bones for calcium and phosphorus, and small amounts of vegetables and supplements for complete nutrition. Each meal is formulated to meet AAFCO standards for growth. This is precisely balanced nutrition designed for developing puppies.
Kibble: Orijen Amazing Grains Puppy is one of the highest-quality commercial puppy foods available. Puppies begin weaning onto both raw and kibble at 3 weeks while continuing to nurse as long as the dam permits.
The Visible Difference:
Puppies raised on quality nutrition don't just test well on paper. The difference is visible to anyone who knows what to look for.
Coat Quality
Softer, shinier coats with less doggy odor. The oils in raw food produce coats that gleam.
Energy & Focus
Steady, sustainable energy without the hyperactivity spikes that low-quality food can cause.
Digestion
Smaller, firmer, less odorous stools. More nutrients absorbed, less waste produced.
For a litter of 5 puppies raised to 10 weeks: $2,500+ in raw food costs alone (not including kibble or adult dog food). A typical raw order lasts approximately 2 weeks.
Why Orijen Amazing Grains Puppy?
When choosing a kibble to complement raw feeding, I selected Orijen Amazing Grains Puppy—one of the highest-quality commercial puppy foods on the market. If you choose to continue with kibble after bringing your puppy home, this is what I recommend.
90% animal ingredients — First 5 ingredients are always fresh or raw animal protein (chicken, turkey, herring, mackerel, salmon)
WholePrey formulation — Includes organs and nutrient-rich parts, not just muscle meat
Quality grains — Oat groats, millet, quinoa, and chia instead of corn, wheat, or soy
No legumes/pulses — Avoids the DCM (heart disease) concerns associated with grain-free diets high in peas and lentils
Prebiotics & probiotics — Supports digestive health during the transition period
No recalls in US or Canada — Clean safety record; manufactured in their own facilities, not outsourced
Orijen uses regionally sourced, fresh ingredients and manufactures in their own facilities in Kentucky. The Amazing Grains line specifically addresses concerns about grain-free diets while maintaining the high-protein, meat-first formulation that Orijen is known for.
Puppies also receive high-quality, puppy-appropriate chews and enrichment items throughout their development.

Puppy Take-Home Kit
Every puppy goes home with a thoughtfully assembled kit designed to ease the transition and set families up for success. Each item is chosen for a specific reason.
Snuggle Puppy with Artificial Heartbeat & Heat Pack
Reduces first-night crying and stress by mimicking the warmth and heartbeat of littermates. Puppies who have a Snuggle Puppy settle faster in their crate and experience less separation anxiety during the transition.
Small Blanket from First Puppy Photos
A keepsake that marks your puppy's earliest days—used in their newborn photos and carrying the scent of their first weeks of life.
Larger Blanket Scented with Littermates & Dam
Rubbed on mom and siblings before departure, this blanket provides familiar, comforting scents that help your puppy feel safe in their new environment. Scent is a dog's most powerful sense—this blanket is a bridge between their old life and new.
Flat Collar & Leash
Properly sized for a standard poodle puppy. A flat collar is safe for young puppies (no martingale or choke chains), and having the correct size means you can begin leash training immediately without waiting for supplies.
Set of 2 Greyhound Combs
Essential for poodle coat maintenance. Regular combing prevents mats from forming close to the skin—far easier than dealing with established tangles. Starting coat care early teaches your puppy to accept grooming as routine.
Kong Toy
Kongs can be stuffed with food and frozen, providing mental enrichment and soothing sore gums during teething. They're also a virtually indestructible safe toy for unsupervised crate time.
Puppy's Favorite Toy from the Litter Toybox
Your puppy already loves this toy. It carries the scent of playtime with siblings and provides continuity during a period of major change. Familiar objects reduce stress.
Training Treats & Puppy-Appropriate Chews
High-value treats your puppy already knows and loves. You can begin training the moment you get home using rewards your puppy is already motivated by.
15-35 lbs of Raw Food for Diet Transition
Enough food to last through the transition period without an abrupt diet change. Sudden food switches cause digestive upset; this supply gives you time to source ongoing food while keeping your puppy's stomach settled.
Microchip with Prepaid Lifetime Registration
Implanted at 8 weeks, the microchip is your puppy's permanent identification. If they're ever lost, a quick scan at any vet or shelter can reunite you. Registration is prepaid for life—nothing more for you to do.
Custom Birth Certificate
A keepsake documenting your puppy's birth date, parents, and litter. Something to frame and treasure.
Complete Veterinary Records & Documentation
Everything your new vet needs: vaccination history, deworming schedule, health check records, and genetic test results. No gaps in medical history. Your vet can continue care seamlessly.
Personal Copy of Puppy Contract
Your reference document outlining our mutual commitments: health guarantees, return policies, breeding restrictions, and ongoing support. Keep this for your records.
AKC & UKC Registration Paperwork ($120-200 value)
Your puppy is registered with both major kennel clubs, opening doors to conformation, obedience, agility, rally, scent work, and dozens of other activities. Registration is completed—just submit the transfer.
30 Days of AKC Pet Insurance
Coverage begins immediately, protecting you during the transition period when puppies are most vulnerable to accidents and stress-related illness. Gives you time to research and select long-term coverage.
Every item in this kit was chosen because it serves a purpose in easing your puppy's transition, supporting their health, or setting you up for training success from day one.
Kit Value: ~$250 per puppy

What's NOT Included in These Numbers
The costs above represent only the tangible, trackable expenses. They do not account for the significant hidden costs that every ethical breeder absorbs. Costs that cannot be easily quantified but represent a substantial investment nonetheless.
My Time & Lost Income
When I have puppies, I do not work. I stay with the litter 24/7 to ensure I can give them the best possible start. For the first two weeks, I sleep next to the whelping box. For the following six weeks, my life revolves around puppy care, socialization exercises, and developmental enrichment. This represents weeks of foregone income that never appears in any cost breakdown.
Facility Costs
A dedicated, climate-controlled space for whelping and raising puppies. Utilities to maintain proper temperature and humidity. Cleaning supplies used constantly to maintain sanitary conditions. Flooring, fencing, and puppy-safe environments that must be maintained and periodically replaced.
Continuing Education
Seminars, workshops, and courses on canine reproduction, genetics, behavior, and training. Breed club memberships and educational resources. Books, subscriptions, and research materials. The investment in knowledge that allows me to make informed breeding decisions and raise puppies using evidence-based protocols.
Equipment Depreciation
Whelping boxes wear out. Grooming tables need replacement. Crates, exercise pens, and enrichment equipment get damaged with use. The initial investment in quality equipment is just the beginning—ongoing replacement and maintenance costs accumulate over time.
Years of Preparation
The cost of acquiring, raising, training, and titling a breeding-quality dog before she ever produces a litter. Years of showing, health testing, and evaluation. The dogs who were purchased or raised but ultimately not bred because they did not meet the standard. Every breeding dog represents years of investment before producing a single puppy.
Lifetime Commitment
The commitment to take back any dog I produce, at any point in their life, for any reason. The cost of caring for returned dogs, providing veterinary care, and rehoming them appropriately. The emotional investment in every puppy that continues long after they leave my home.
When you purchase a puppy from an ethical breeder, you are not just paying for the puppy. You are compensating for years of preparation, weeks of around-the-clock care, and a lifetime commitment to every dog produced. The price of a well-bred puppy reflects the true cost of doing things right.
Why This Matters to You
Every investment listed above directly benefits you and your puppy. Here's how each cost translates into tangible value for your family.
Health Testing

The price of an ethically-bred puppy is an investment that pays dividends for the lifetime of your dog. Lower veterinary costs, easier training, fewer behavioral problems, and a healthier, happier companion for years to come.
The Value of Ethical Breeding
This transparency reflects the commitment behind every Pantheon puppy. Each litter represents extensive health testing, genetic research, premium nutrition, comprehensive veterinary care, and scientifically-backed early enrichment through Puppy Culture.
Ethical breeding is not a business designed to maximize profit. It is a labor of love guided by responsibility to the breed, to each individual puppy, and to the families who welcome them home. Most ethical breeders do not profit from their programs—we breed because we are passionate about producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs who will become cherished family members.
Ethical breeding is an investment in the future of the breed—in producing sound, healthy, well-socialized puppies who become cherished family members and ambassadors for standard poodles.
When you choose a responsibly-bred puppy, you are not just acquiring a pet. You are supporting a breeder who prioritizes health over shortcuts, who invests time and resources in early development, and who stands behind their puppies for life. You are choosing quality over convenience, and your puppy—and your family—will benefit from that choice for years to come.
The difference between a well-bred puppy and a poorly-bred one is not always visible on day one. But over the lifetime of your dog, the investment in ethical breeding reveals itself: in fewer health problems, in a stable temperament, in a dog who was set up for success from the moment of conception.
Ready to Invest in Excellence?
If you understand and appreciate the investment that goes into producing a well-bred puppy, I would love to hear from you. The right families understand that quality costs, and that it's worth every penny.
